Our aim is to design and make new products and ways of making them that leaves the planet in a better place than it was.
It starts with material choice. Our hypothesis is that the only way to a nature positive future in textiles is to work with nature. The best way to do this is with naturally grown fibre. This way we can harness nature's ability to regenerate itself. We started with merino wool, responsibly grown, and we have recently added certified organic cotton to the fold.
The next step is to create products without waste and with very low emissions. So, we chose to focus on fully-fashioned and whole-garment knitwear where the manufacturing process produces almost no waste. Every piece of every garment is made to the shape and size that is needed. No offcuts.
Everything is made in-house at our studio. From the time the yarn arrives to when the garment goes to its new owner it never leaves us. No shipping from factory to factory.
All our products are designed to be in use for a long time. They are made from the highest quality fibre available, and with precision and care. Our designs and colours are also timeless and every piece repairable, able to be repurposed and easily recyclable. One of the unique aspects of Brood knitwear is that we can recover the yarn from a product by simply unravelling it, all without any waste.
Finally, in the distant future, when our products are at the end of their useful life, they can still be put to work. Being made of natural fibre, they will break down in the soil and return all their goodness to it, ready for the next cycle of growth.
We are not there yet, but we are working on it.
